Today, the Centre for Law and Democracy (CLD) is launching its Training Programme on the Right to Information for Maldivian Information Officers and Senior Management: Participants’ Manual, in English and Divehi, the language of the Maldives. The nearly 100-page document is designed to build understanding about the standards and practical steps to implement the system set out in the 2014 Maldivian Right to Information Act, one of the top 20 RTI laws globally.
“While this training manual is aimed specifically at the Maldives, the fact that their law is so strong means that it is a useful reference for many others as well,” said Toby Mendel, Executive Director of CLD. “We encourage those providing training on the right to information to review this manual to see if they can use it to enhance the training they are providing or even use it as their main training manual, perhaps after tweaking it a bit to reflect their own legislation.”
The manual includes a three-day training agenda and is divided into seven main sessions. These sessions look at issues like the importance of RTI and global trends in this area, legal standards for this right under international and Maldivian law, undertaking proactive disclosure, processing requests for information, interpreting exceptions, processing appeals, reporting, promotional activities and monitoring and evaluation.
The manual is available in both English and Divehi.
